Web Site Design

I develop a 2 page prompt – which they can copy and paste because I provide it digitally. They would not have enough time to type it all. They don’t really have to know anything about the subject because the basic info is there.  They need to use all the info in the prompt (not all the pictures and titles I provide - that is for decoration and I give them several to choose from) , and they should add their own “Fake” info into the prompt to make the pages look better – a great example would be a fake web address to find information about the topic, or their own citations of the pictures or information I provide–as they would if they had found the information or even “fake” quotes about the subject. What they need to be able to do is organize the information, maybe add some touches, and design the page to look good.  They only have an hour and that is not much time to get way deep into topics.

There have been students to use templates, but we give more points to those who create their own design.

Code is much harder to do because of the time, but if the student show the judges they use code, they will get bonus points.

To give points for writing and citations, students will have to add some of their own words as described above.  Otherwise, there will be nothing to judge for those two areas.

An example of a prompt would be: Mr. X wants you to create a page about his pig farm. Use the info provided to develop a web site he can use to sell his pigs.  I would provide info about the farm, pictures of the farm, some titles that the student may or may not chose to use.  Enough info for a basic site.  I would expect the student to take that info, organize it the way they think it should be, add some more information(the fake info I was speaking about) and make the page look good.  They will not be able to use the internet, only the pictures provided.  They can create their own titles, background, or enhance the pictures I provided in some way.

I hope this helps!

Remember, the students will have to use a flash drive I give them to add the folder of pictures and the prompt.  They need to have proper rights to save to their desktop.  Make sure they can log on to their computer when they get there. Make sure they are a few minutes early to load the prompt and pictures – an hour is not much time.

EVENT DAY!!
My name is Cindy Johann.  I am the lead for Website Design.  I have been lead for several years now and enjoy it very much.  Every year, we have some of the same problems. I would like to address these problems for a smoother day next Tuesday.  Below are things you will want to remember.
  • Students must bring their own laptop.
  • Students must load prompt and pictures on their laptop from a flash drive I provide(we will help the younger ones).  Make sure they have those rights.
  • There will be no internet and you can’t use internet.  Students cry when they come expecting to use the internet and they can’t and then we all feel bad!
  • Software must be on the computer when you get to the event.  We can not load web design software.
  • They have 1 hour to finish their design.  They will have to remain in the room while the judges judge their sites(because we need the computers to look at and determine if the links work).  They can not leave their laptop with the judges, they must stay until the judging is finished – the judges do not want the responsibility of keeping up with laptops because theyare very busy and there is a lot of people in and out of the room.
  • Adults or other students can not stay in the room while they are designing the site.
  • Please have someone pick up students so we know they are going to a safe place.
  • Please read the rubric with the students so they know what to expect.

What they need to be able to do is organize the information, maybe add some touches, and design the page that looks good and is functional.  They only have an hour and that is not much time to get way deep into topics.
